Thegn Eskil Borg, Varagyr

Known among his fellow astartes for his ill temper and fearsome demeanor, Eskil Borg is Thegn of Jarl Skunnr’s Varagyr and champion of Sesc Company. But, more than that, Eskil Borg is the Jarl’s naysayer and truth talker, keeping the Lord of Sesc Company honest.

Sporting a matched pair of master-crafted lightning claws, the Thegn reaps a bloody toll among the Routs enemies whenever he is called upon to fight. His prowess and skill in combat matched only by the Jarl himself within the ranks of Sesc Company.

Varagyr, ‘The Wolf Guard’

The Varagyr are the chosen warriors of Leman Russ, hand-picked from his own Great Company to form his personal guard and close companions in war and council. To have attained such a rank and position, each has distinguished himself in battle many times over, and each has forged his own saga worth the telling.

More so than any other of his sons they are the wolves of his pack, marked by the great beast pelt which adorns their armour, and to adopt this honour means more than simply to walk in the Wolf King’s shadow and lay down their lives for him if needs be, it means something much more. It means that at least for a time they have foregone the chance to lead their brothers in battle, to watch while others strike, to stand fast and not to seek out the glory of battle save when their lord commands. When such coldly withheld fury is unleashed however, it falls like a thunderbolt against the foe.

Armoured in mighty suits of Cataphractii pattern tactical dreadnought armour the Varagyr are nigh unstoppable force in battle. Wielding might chain axes with teeth forged from the very bones and rock of Fenris, the fury of their uncompromising assaults has become legend.

Design note: the weapons arms have been re-organised and poses changed on these Varagyr to differentiate them from the other pack.

‘Best Loyalist Army’ – Legion of Peterborough

In June of last year the Legion of Peterborough held a fantastic Heresy event, ‘Blood & Steel: The Battle of Laernan Prime’ which consisted of a number of small centurion based games.

It was humbling and pleasing to get the peer vote from my fellow hobbyists for the ‘Best Loyalist Army’

(re-sculpting all that Varagyr fur was clearly worth the effort)

Thegn/Claw Leader [Centurion] WIP01

Keen to develop a centurion around the core of a Varagyr model, work has commenced on a claw leader, a leader for the Varagyr Squads under Sesc Company’s Jarl. The model is designed to pay homage to a model that inspired my love of the Vlka Fenryka, a kitbash of the original metal Wolf Guard Terminator Sergeant with lightning claws and some additional accessories.

This model will echo that.

The base Varagyr model has had the fur removed with a dremel rotary tool, cleaned in preparation for new fur to be sculpted. The power pack has also be reduced in projection, cut back to allow the plastic pelt to sit at a more natural angle, all of this will be hidden on the final model.

Plastic lightning claws have been added and the Varagyr shoulder pauldrons cleaned up to fit over the plastic arms. Over this the arms of the pelt have been filed back an bent to fit naturally over the armoured plates.

The leather pteruges have been covered with sculpted with fur, matching the Varagyr model conversions. Likewise loin cloth fur and pelt has been completed in a matching manner.

Based to match the army the model is essentially complete.

Forge World Varagyr WIP 03

With the original five Varagyr converted to correct some posing issues and all of the fur resculpted attention has turned to the sixth pack member. With five unique models making the sixth posed a challenge to achieve a differing aesthetic, as such the potential duplicate model was chosen to be the Squad’s Thegn allowing for a little more customisation.

the fur was resculpted to match the rest of the squad and his frost-axe switched out for a chainfist. A grenade harness as added to the top of the carapace.

Whilst building this model a second thegn was converted up to lead the second proposed varagyr pack.

Forge World Varagyr WIP 02

With all the fur re-sculpted on both the legs and below the pauldrons the Varagyr have been assembled.

Two of the Varagyr have had their posing altered, mostly through shortening their gaits (to reduce their stride length) and making minor adjustments to the arm and torso connections to get a better visual fit of the shoulder pads to torsos.

The combi-bolters were also swapped out to be replaced with standard pattern ones with the twin barrel magasins instead of the belt fed shells.
