Whirlwind Scorpius WIP 01

After trawling the Legiones Astartes Age of Darkness Army List for fire support and long range options to compliment the Wolves i stumbled across this little narrative gem!

So that pretty much secured the choice of fire support! A slight oddity with the rules lead to the need for a conversion; the rules give the Scorpius a higher side armour value than the standard Rhino, but the model shares the same side panels. More armour plating was required to make the aesthetic match the rules.

In order to remove the side access doors, the hinges and step plate were cut off, a plasticard insert cut to size and added with the gaps filled. This was then all sanded down and primed.

The resultant tank looks more heavily protected from the side than the rhino, but not so much that it looks like ‘extra armour’. A couple of minor armour details were added for interest.

MkIIb Achilles Pattern Raider Battle Tank WIP

Decided to add some anti-tank fire power to the army, and in doing so provide a transport for the flamer support squad. The Achilles was a clear choice, the multi-meltas and quad gun helping with a tactical weakness while firmly fitting in with the theme of immolation and destroyer units for the Wight Flame’s Wielders.

Rather disappointing that the model required so much gap filling, but pleased with the outcome. The sponson weapons of have magnetised for versatility of use.

Decided to add tank crew, bringing some more character to the model.

MkIIb Phobos, Raider Pattern Battle Tank

The Raider pattern Battle Tank is among the most powerful transports commonly found in the Armouriums of the Legionnes Astartes. While there are several sub-classes of the Raider Tank, the Phobos is favoured by the warriors of the Vlka Fenryka for its transport capacity and frontal assault ramp. The MkIIb was widely distributed through the legions in the latter years of the Great Crusade, with its like finding even the exploratory fleets of the White Scars on the farthest frontiers.

The example pictured below is in the storm-grey of the Vlka Fenryka, serving the 6th Legion among many others of its kind.

Spartan Assault Tanks

An armoured transport of truly massive proportions, the Spartan is a heavy assault tank previously all but unknown outside of the revered Adeptus Astartes and the secretive Adeptus Mechanicus. The Spartan is a huge armoured conveyor whose purpose is to carry a large body of troops into the very heart of an enemy’s battle lines, weathering weapons fire that would be the death of any lesser vehicle. It is this very reason that the tank is favoured by the warriors and commanders of the Rout.

Its design bears clear connections with that of the mighty Land Raider, and its genius is such that the greater proportion of its interior space is given over to a transport capacity greater than any other Imperial vehicle save the super-heavy Gorgons – being capable of carrying twenty-five power armoured Astartes warriors into battle. It is, however, considerably faster on the battlefield thanks to potent reactor-driven motive drives, and it boasts an equally potent armament in the form of sponson-mounted quad lascannon batteries and secondary heavy bolters. If the tank is considered to be fearsome, its cargo is ever more deadly!

The spartans have been finished in the storm grey of the Vlka Fenryka, with iconography and details picked out in rich brasses and gold tones, representative of their role as transports for the Legion’s elite, the Varagyr.

Legion Vindicator Siege Tank

The Vlka Fenryka favour these powerful assault tanks, mostly because the Vindicator’s principal armament is a heavy-calibre demolisher cannon capable of shattering fortifications and breaching the armour plates of tanks with equal ease. It is invaluable in urban warfare as it can blast and shunt its way through barricades and obstacles, enabling troops following behind free passage through streets that might have otherwise swiftly degenerated into kill zones.

The vindicator will support the three Grey Slayer packs as they advance, eliminating the largest threats to the infantry.

The vindicator colour scheme has the storm grey of the legion, complimented with a white ablative shield and red knotwork to match the Great Company colour scheme to which it is attached.

Armoured Reinforcements WIP

With the majority of the infantry done on the re-imagined wolves, attention turned to providing them with some tanks and fire support. The decision on what to add was fairly straight forward. Keen to keep the Vlka Fenryka as a heavily infantry based force, tank choice was prioritised to those units that would either transport infantry or directly support the theme of a fast assault force.

A pair of spartans were required to transport the two terminator units, with no other vehicle being able to match their transport capacity and surety of delivery. These would form the core of the armoured force.

Next up was the selection of a vindicator (with demolisher cannon), this seemed like a good fit with the fast moving force, the tank is aggressive, short to mid range with its primary weapon and feels like a homage to the battering rams employed in ancient sieges.  I added heresy-era tank tracks by Extra Armour (https://extra-armour.com/).

The final choice was a Fire Raptor, a close support gunship to give direct fire support to the infantry and assault tanks. The fire raptor has some fairly large gaps that required filling (the next step).

All in all these four armoured support units will form the core of the vehicle support for the Vlka Fenryka. All brutal and aggressive units that put themselves in harms way to support the infantry.
