Thegn Scarsgard Greymane, Claw Leader, Sesc Company

Scarsgard Greymane is a formidable warrior and war-leader of the the Rout. Serving Jarl Skunnr Greymane has developed a reputation for swift and decisive action, a quite warrior who’s actions speak louder than any battle cry. Reputed as a grizzled hunter and assault leader, Greymane’s true calling is as duelist, seeking out a worthy foe and testing his mettle. It is this latter quality that lead to Greymane honing his skills and rising to be crowned Sesc Company’s Champion.

As one of Sesc Company’s claw leaders, Greymane leads a detachment of warriors, a warband of wolves. Greymane’s claw specialise in rapid assault, known amongst the Rout as Storm Claws these warriors are equipped with Jump Packs, Bikes and Landspeeders.

As a champion of Sesc Company, Scarsgard Greymane has the honour of wearing Artificered Armour, and wields a mighty executioners axe of incredible potential, a paragon blade by any standard. His armour is adorned with knot work designs that tell the saga of his thread, the crossed arrows on his jump pack denote him as a storm claw, the Gyre Triskel on his left pauldron tells of survival against dire odds.

Huscarls of the Wolf King. Legion Veterans.

Russ’s huscarls are the sixth legion veterans, warriors of true grit and mettle tested in the crucible of war. They are the Legion’s finest warriors and champions, making up the Varagyr or Wolf Guard.

Lead by the indomitable Brodr Halfdan, these legion veterans have proven their worth time and time again, escorting their King into battle as is their role and honour. Answering only to the Primarch, they stand apart from the Great Company’s hierarchy, for they are Russ’ sworn huscarls and wolf guard.

Legion Champion Consul WIP

The centurion is essentially complete. The paragon blade arm has been pinned in place and a suitable shoulder pauldron converted to compliment the amour.

The champion’s head has been reposed slightly to sit more naturally on the torso, with the bead slightly heat bent to match the model’s motion.

All in all, the centurion has come out particularly well, the Geigor base lends perfectly to a warrior in artificer armour.

Legion Champion Consul WIP

Developing a new consul to lead the Rout, a Thegn or Claw Leader to lead a detachment under the Jarl. With the first Claw complete (3x Packs of 15 Grey Slayers), this will form the start of the second claw, a fast attack and assault orientated detachment. This thegn will be equipped with an Jump Pack, keeping him fast and at pace with the troops.

Proposed wargear and selection:

  • Legion Champion Consul
  • Artificer Armour
  • Paragon Blade
  • Jump Pack
  • Refractor Field

To forge this champion, i have selected to use the Geigor model as a base, mostly as its ornate and detail totems lend to representing Artificer Armour. In order to adapt it to the correct and established aesthetic for Astartes with Jump Packs, the torso armour has been over-clad with additional plating (to match the MkIV Assault Marines).

The over armour was adorned with a wolf tooth/totem necklace from the Primaris Upgrade sprue.

The plan for the paragon blade is to use a combination of weapons to represent it, rather than a single prestigious blade. Taking reference from vikings in filmography, a long knife and axe will be the matched pair of weapons to represent the Paragon Blade, this will be complimented with a holstered bolt-pistol.

The blade was made from the hand and haft of a MkIII Thunder Hammer, clipped below the head. The Blade is from the Traitor Cataphractii Librarian, the serrated blade and patterning complimenting the Wolves’ aesthetic. The arm was built from a second set of Geigor’s arms, the left arm cut off below the elbow to remove the frost claw, and replaced with a carefully trimmed vambrace from Geigor’s right arm. This keeps continuity in the armour’s detailing, matching the two vambraces with the rest of the armour.

Legion Veterans WIP

Within the composition of the army and creating rosters for games, the Primarch Leman Russ is proving to be a tricky character to field. While his battlefield role as an executioner of characters is clear, his placement within a roster is less clean cut. From a narrative perspective it seems logical to field him with Varagyr Terminators, although their lack of maneuverability and limitations on sweeping advance restrict Russ’ potential. Thus the role falls to the Legion Veterans (listed under Russ’ rules as representing his Wolf Guard), who have access to Warriors Mettle as a Legion specific optional upgrade. A rule that is unusable once Russ is attached to the unit. Thus the logical option to take for the Legion Veterans is ‘Weapon Masters’ raising the units Weapon Skill to 5, matching the Varagyr.

From a modelling perspective, the unit has been created from MkIII Iron Armour marines, combined with elements of the Grey Slayer Upgrade Kit and the Legion Upgrade Torsos. The axes are from the formally available MkIII weapons upgrades kit, trimmed to only have a single blade.

Tartaros Command Squad WIP

With Hvarl Red-Blade previewed and added to the list of future acquisitions for the Rout, design and planning has commenced on a Tartaros command squad to accompany the Jarl. With the Cataphractii Varagyr’s aesthetic differing from the standard legion pattern and many of these design cues reflected within Hvarl’s Tartaros armour, it seems only fitting that the Tartaros Command Squad accompanying Hvarl should be equally representative.

Comparing the standard legion pattern of Tartaros Terminator Armour with Hvarl’s battle plate the following alterations are required;

  • Torso; the raised gorget is to be lowered and lined with a studded decorative plate.
  • Totems & Fetishes; The addition of rune stones, wolf tooth trinkets and similar decoration is required.
  • Leg Armour; Pyramid shaped molecular bonding studs are required on the shin armour.
  • Fur; the addition of wolf pelts and fur adornment.

These changes will help create a set of Tartaros Terminator armour that reflects the design cus of both the Varagyr and Hvarl Red-Blade.

Torso alterations

The gorget on the Tartaros torso was cut down and replaced with the arch from the Cataphractii plate, creating a lowered and suitably decorated gorget in the style of Hvarl’s.

Leg Armour

The legs were adorned with pyramid rivets (a one off gift from a friend), wolf skull decoration, strapped on with greenstuff and sculpted fur pteruges.

Totems and Decoration

The torso’s have been further enhanced with sculpted necklacess of wolves teeth and rune stones.

Studs were added to the shoulder pauldrons of those terminators that don’t have them on their leg armour.
